Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the role. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting until after she had reached adulthood because her parents were afraid of the negative consequences stress can have. Perry admitted that she wasn't confident in her acting during high school. However, she began acting to connect with new people in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry managed to get small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. Homesickness, however, caused her to move back to California again where she began performing on stage. She performed on Broadway with her mother in The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie together with her in the year 2015. Perry starred in nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. She had a regular role in the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. The character she played was a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The character was assigned to her through audition, despite the fact that she is a relative to the character.
